The Backstory

The cast of characters in "Written on the Wall" have lived inside my head for over 15 years.  I wrote my first novel manuscript in 2009, a girl-meets-boy in the big city, chick-lit adventure set in San Francisco.  A few years later, I followed with a second novel, about motherhood, marriage, and the intersection of identity.  And finally, in 2014, I wrote my first draft of "Written on the Wall."

In this book, I gave each central character a core crisis, and set up the real-life friendships to falter within the framework of virtual social media.  These four strong women navigate the complexities of love, family, friendship, career, mental health, neurodiversity, and more.  Reimagining the narrative, while revising the book with present-day language and structure has been an incredibly rewarding journey.  I'm so thrilled to finally be bringing these characters into your life.  (And I hope to publish the two prequels someday as well!)

I hope you enjoy reading "Written on the Wall," a women's fiction novel set in Northern California.

What's it about?

The book according to my publisher (the cover blurb)

Written on the Wall by Marisa Atha follows the intertwined lives of four women as they navigate the complexities of love, family, and the pursuit of happiness. Becka struggles with the heart-wrenching disappointment of failed attempts at conceiving a child while Sara finds solace in the everyday joys of motherhood. Renee and Dena never plan to exchange San Francisco’s night scene for quiet family life, but unforeseen events shift their trajectory. As their paths intersect and diverge, the four women grapple with the challenges of balancing personal desires with external expectations. With poignant prose and heartfelt storytelling, Marisa Atha delves into the depths of human emotion and resilience, painting a vivid portrait of four women on a journey of self-discovery and redemption. Written on the Wall is a compelling exploration of the ties that bind us and the choices that define us.

The book according to me (the query pitch)

It’s hard to know what goes on between two people, and the glorified Facebook “wall” may not tell the whole story. Although connected via the modern conveniences of technology, four women find themselves diverging from their once tight-knit friendships—not in spite of Facebook, but because of it. Written on the Wall explores current topics and stressors that women and their families face, such as the stereotypes of child and adult autism spectrum disorder, the stigma of artificial fertility methods, the practice of mainstream versus alternative medicine, the decision whether to procreate, and the ever-elusive family/work-life balance. The platform of Facebook—a relatively new form of communication that now permeates the fabric of longtime friendships—offers a unique platform to view the way social media skews reality and perception. This novel will appeal to readers of contemporary women’s fiction.
